By becoming computer literate, students gain skills and competencies that will help them develop or enhance their communication abilities, involvement in their children’s education and their own academic and/or vocational studies, participation in community life, and earning potential in the workforce. 4. Installed Software Educational software is installed on all workstations. Offerings range from award-winning Mavis Beacon’s Keyboarding Tutorial to IBM’s Reading Recognition program for English as a Second Language learners. 5. Educational Web Site The ESOL and ABE Progams at CAMBA's Adult Literacy Center web site is a user-friendly online study and resource center for ESL/ABE learners and adult educators alike. It introduces students enrolled in the Adult Literacy Center, as well as their achievements and inspiring success stories. Among other features, students can learn through online lessons, take quizzes, and practice newly acquired knowledge using interactive games and educational activities. English as a Second Language (ESL)/Adult Basic Education (ABE) Classes: Each year, about 2,000 U.S. born and immigrants from the Caribbean, Latin America, Eastern Europe, Asia, and Africa are enrolled in CAMBA's Adult Literacy Center (885 Flatbush Avenue - Brooklyn, N.Y.). These individuals enter ESL/ABE classes to enhance their Listening, Speaking, Reading, Writing, and Math skills so that they can fully participate in their children's education, apply for better jobs, enter training programs, go to college, and receive orientation and civics instruction that help them adjust to life in New York City. Job Readiness, Money Management, Civics, Family Literacy, and Health Literacy are integrated in technology-assisted curricula designed to help students meet or exceed the state's learning standards. Technology-Assisted Classes: CAMBA's Adult Literacy Center runs a ESOL and ABE Progams at CAMBA's Adult Literacy Center with the dual goal of (1) assisting teaching staff in integrating technology into ESL/ABE activities through ongoing staff training and support and (2) providing technology-assisted instruction to enhance and complement ESL and ABE skills acquisition by students at the literacy center. The program has a technology laboratory equipped with a state-of-the-art projection system and with networked computers which students and instructors use to (a) write resumes, (b) complete class assignments, (c) practice listening, speaking, reading, writing, or math skills, and (d) access the web to check e-mails, conduct research, and use various online resources. Also, the program maintains an educational web site (www.esolcamba.org). For further information about the ESL/ABE classes, contact Jovy de la Paz at (718) 940-3453 or via e-mail at jovyp@camba.org.
